Biographical Information
William Frej first visited Mayan sites in the Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in 1971, fresh out of architecture school. German explorer and photographer, Teobert Maler, and specifically his 1892 photograph of El Castillo at Chichen Itza was the major inspiration for Frej’s work. Frej began retracing Maler’s route and photographing many of the same sites in 2013, as he retired from a 30-year career in the Foreign Service. The result of this project is Maya Ruins Revisited: In the Footsteps of Teobert Maler, published by Peyton Wright Gallery in Santa Fe, NM and distributed by the University of Oklahoma Press.
