Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of one string bound paper scrapbook album with leather covers. The front cover is embossed with the University of New Mexico seal. It contains invitations to dances, personal photographs, and other mementos pertaining to Huning’s time as a student at the University of New Mexico. Examples includes playbills for local theater productions and newspaper clippings that focus on Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. It also includes Huning’s letter of acceptance to UNM, pending her passing of an entrance examination. There are also pressed flower corsages she wore to some dances and filled out dance cards. The album also includes a letter to Huning seeking information about heirs to an inheritance, which may include her. Many of the pages in the album are blank.

Biographical Note

Betty Huning was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on September 10, 1917 and passed away July 11, 2004. Huning attended Albuquerque High School and began attending the University of New Mexico in 1935, eventually earning both a BA and MA. She was an education major and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married John W. Hinton in 1941 and had a daughter, Margaret Hinton Bell, and a son, John H. Hinton. She was a longtime supporter of UNM and wrote a two biographies of prominent women in UNM history: Lena C. Clauve, UNM’s first Dean of Women, and Elizabeth P. Simpson, the Chair of UNM’s Home Economics Department. She taught in the Albuquerque Public Schools for 25 years and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. She came from a pioneer New Mexico family, her grandfather was Louis B. Huning, who settled in Las Lunas about 1858 where he established a ranching and mercantile business.
