Scope and Content Note

This collection is 1 cu. ft. and contains New Mexico Geographic Information Council's (NMGIC) meeting minutes, incorporation papers, a sampling of newsletters, documents setting up partnerships with federal and state agencies, the first survey in New Mexico to assess the geographic data needs and resources in the state, and conferences sponsored by NMGIC. The folders are organized into alphabetized categories and arranged chronologically within each category.

Organizational Note

The New Mexico Geographic Information Council, Inc. (NMGIC) was established in November 1984 by individuals from state, federal and local agencies, universities, and private industry committed to the development of geographic information and related technologies. NMGIC was incorporated as a non-profit organization in November 1989 and is managed by an elected nine member Board of Directors. NMGIC publishes The Map Legend newsletter three times a year and conducts conferences and workshops on geographic information systems, state-mapping priorities, and issues related to New Mexico’s geographic priorities, standards, and related technologies. NMGIC goals are to promote cooperation among government agencies and private industry in addressing geographic information and services within the state; to provide services and materials on geographic information system and digital mapping sources; and to establish guidelines to ensure that proposed geographic names reflect local usage and historical and cultural significance.
