Historical Note
Mary Jo Starrett founded the Town Club Sorority at the University of New Mexico on May 5, 1938. The club was an independent sorority that encouraged participation in social and student activities, such as charity projects and community service. The Alumnae Chapter is still active and contributes to Presidential Scholarships. They will be celebrating their 70th anniversary in May, 2008.
Through the years, Town Club sponsored many activities on campus, including a barn dance, winter formal, spring banquet, Mother’s Day Breakfast, Thanksgiving Kidnap Breakfast, and the Orchid and Gold Ball. Moreover, club members took part in, but didn’t sponsor, other campus activities, including Fiesta, Stunt Night, homecoming, Song Fest, Sigma Chi Derby Days, student government and academic honoraries.
The club and its members won ribbons and awards for activities, such as homecoming, activities night, and the Heart Fund, as well as queens of various dances/events.
Town Club’s colors were orchid and gold. Their pin is an arrow with the letters “TC" on the shaft. Their flower is the Dutch iris.
