Historical Note
The Art Student Association (ASA) was a chartered student organization that reported to and received its budget from the Associated Students of UNM (ASUNM). The ASA operated the Art Student Association Gallery that was located in the basement of the Student Union Building (SUB) from 1973-2005. The Gallery exhibited and sold artwork created by UNM art students and visiting student artists from other universities. After the remodel of the SUB in 2001, the ASA Gallery occupied a space that had been originally been planned as a study area called “The Quiet Lounge.” At the end of the spring semester of 2005, the Associated Students of UNM and UNM Recreation Services jointly decided to close the Gallery and replace it with a gymnasium. The ASA fought the removal of the Gallery, meeting with the SUB directors and circulating a petition, but the space was quietly transformed over the summer of 2005. The last exhibit at the ASA Gallery was a group show entitled Mentors’ Alchemy that ran from April 29th to May 6th of 2005. As of 2006, the ASA no longer appears in listings of UNM chartered student organizations.
