Historical Note

The Jonson Gallery was the former on-campus home of Transcendentalist painter and art professor, Raymond Jonson. In addition to his art collection, he bequeathed his home to the University of New Mexico for student exhibition and teaching space. In 1998, many years after Jonson’s death, Jonson Gallery curator Tiska Blankenship learned of the university’s plan to build a parking structure near the gallery, or perhaps to even raze the gallery to accommodate the planned structure. Blankenship initiated a campaign to save the Jonson Gallery and with professional and community support successfully saved the gallery from destruction, though a parking structure was built adjacent to it several years later.
