Historical Note

Founded in 1898, the College of Arts and Sciences is the University’s oldest and largest college. In the early years, it was known as the College of Letters and Sciences, and later, the College of Arts, Philosophy, and Sciences. It received its current name in 1919 and at that time, the College became better organized under the leadership of Dean Lynn Boal Mitchell. Graduation requirements were made clearer and the faculty began to meet regularly in order to establish departmental policies and procedures. The College was divided into upper and lower divisions in 1934, during the tenure of Dean George Pope Shannon. Under the direction of President James F. Zimmerman in the 1930s and 1940s, the College developed a regional focus for its teaching and research. By the end of 2011, the College boasted 20 academic departments that employed 370 tenure-track faculty members and bore the responsibility for teaching more students than any other college or school at the University.
