Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of two scrapbooks. It also includes two diplomas housed in the original holders. One belonging to Farnsworth, and the other to her husband, Lt. Howell Greenwood Ervien II. There is also a multi page document of song lyrics for an old timer’s convention for Alpha Delta Pi that was held in Mt. Estes Colorado in 1946.

This paper scrapbook album #1 is bound by a pink ribbon and has tan colored covers. The front cover has a circular patch of brown leather embossed with an image of a horse’s head framed by a horse shoe. The album begins with Farnsworth’s admission letter from UNM and her first course schedule. The album also contains materials related to rush week events and an invitation to join Alpha Delta Pi sorority. There are invitations to dances, newspaper clippings, greeting cards from friends and family, dance cards, and other mementos pertaining to Farnsworth’s time as a student at the University of New Mexico. There are some pressed flower corsages and ribbons from various events as well.

This string bound paper scrapbook album #2 has brown covers. The front cover is embossed with a gold cross surrounded by a filigree design. The album contains invitations to dances, newspaper clippings, greeting cards from friends and family, dance cards and other mementos pertaining to Farnsworth’s time as a student at the University of New Mexico. Two of the dance invitations are housed in fabric satchels with drawstrings. One includes a playing card with the invitation to a Sigma Chi dance printed on the back. The other contains glitter and play paper money. Both contain plastic poker chips. There are some pressed flowers and corsages and ribbons from various events as well. There is also a typed and signed invitation for Farnsworth to join the national honorary society of Pi Sigma Alpha based on her academic performance in the Department of Government and Citizenship. There is also a copy of a program for the International Relations Club Conference that Farnsworth attended. At the end of the album, there are loose materials, including a circular patch of maroon felt that has an embroidered spur and a greeting card congratulating her on her first job.

Biographical Note

Caroline Farnsworth attended the University of New Mexico from 1945-1949, graduating with honors. She studied government and citizenship and was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and served as its president in her sophomore year. She was the Senate Representative for the Mortar Board in 1949. In June of 1946 she was awarded a Miriam N. Grunsfeld Scholarship. She attended The National Student Organization’s national convention in 1947. The aim of the organization was to foster relationships among students of all countries. She was the national president of the Intercollegiate Association of Women Students, as well as president of the Associated Women Students at UNM. She married Lt. Howell Greenwood Ervien II on April 24, 1949 and worked as a librarian for several decades.
