Historical Note

Paving the way for the College of Fine Arts, President William G. Tight founded the School of Music at the University in 1902. In 1936, President James F. Zimmerman oversaw the establishment of the College of Fine Arts with poet and playwright George St. Clair as its first dean. Like President Tight before him, Zimmerman thought that the University should fit its surroundings and he envisioned that the College would be orientated toward the arts and culture of the Southwest. The building that the College currently occupies was constructed in 1963 while President Thomas L. Popejoy was in office. The largest of its four theaters, Popejoy Hall, is named in his honor. It was completed in 1966 and remains to this day one of the premier venues for the performing arts in the state of New Mexico.
