Scope and Content Note

The Gifts collection contains a wide variety of materials including photos, personal documents, scrapbooks, news clippings, event programs, dance cards, clothing and textiles, commemorative buttons and brooches, toys and decorative items, notebooks, stationary, coffee cups, and wine glasses. Many of these items are related to events held at or by the University including student dances, homecoming, commencement, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the 2001 renovation of the Student Union Building. Donors of materials include alumna Susan Elder, former Academic Vice President Charles Travelstead, former landscape architect to the University Robert Johns, and Lance Bell, son of alumnus Irving Bell.

Historical Note

The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. The University Archives was established in 1985 in conjunction with planning for the University’s Centennial celebration in 1989.
