 Collection
Identifier: UNMA 049

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains files of authors and contributors to the New Mexico Quarterly, circulation information, copyright files, correspondence, clippings, and editing proofs. The bulk of this collection is from 1955 to 1970, as very few documents prior to these years are available. The collection is organized into three series.

Series 1: Contributor files, 1940-1970, are alphabetized by the contributor’s last name. These include all documents that were directly linked to an individual who contributed to the New Mexico Quarterly as a writer, illustrator, poet, book review editor, or as a correspondent.

Series 2: Operation files, 1940-1970, are alphabetized by document type and include all materials engaged with the running of the New Mexico Quarterly such as brochures, clippings, subscriptions, copyright forms, internal correspondence, meetings, and financial records.

Series 3: Editorial proofs, 1957-1969, are arranged by volumes and include the galley proofs generated by the New Mexico Quarterly editors with corrections and typesetting information.

Historical Note

The New Mexico Quarterly was published by the University of New Mexico from 1931 to 1969. The Quarterly was a southwestern journal in the genre of “little magazines.” During its 38-volume run, the journal featured many internationally known writers, poets, and illustrators of the 20th century who published their work for the first time or early in their career in the New Mexico Quarterly. For example, chapters of N. Scott Momaday’s House Made of Dawn first appeared in the New Mexico Quarterly, and in 1969 the novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Many writers and illustrators who were published in the New Mexico Quarterly early in their careers were eventually awarded prestigious prizes by such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts, O Henry Awards, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation.

The New Mexico Quarterly had a regional focus, although differing editorial approaches shaped the journal’s contents over the publication’s lifetime. See David William Pugh’s doctoral thesis, “A Study of Literary, Social, and University History: The Life and Often Hard Times of the New Mexico Quarterly, 1931-1969,” published in 1975, for a detailed history of the New Mexico Quarterly's shifting editorial policies, circulation, and financial issues over the journal’s 38-year span.
