Historical Note

The Public Affairs Department of UNM dates back to July 1, 1946. It originated as the UNM News Bureau during the administration of University President John Wernette and its first director was former Baltimore Sun copy editor Keen Rafferty. The mission of the Bureau was to “tell the University’s story to the general public” and it was responsible for distributing press releases to newspapers, press associations, and radio stations. Rafferty was tapped to chair the new Department of Journalism in 1947 and was replaced as head of the renamed Office of Public Information by Dr. G. Ward Fenley. Career journalist Jess Price succeeded Fenley as director in July of 1966. At that time, the Office divisions consisted of the UNM News Bureau, Sports Information, Photo Services, Publications, and a Radio-TV-Film Section. The Office has also been responsible for hosting guest speakers and lecturers through its speakers’ bureau. The Office of Public Information was renamed the Public Affairs Department in 1984 and it became University Communication and Marketing in 2006.
