Historical Note

Campus murals have been a topic of ongoing debate at UNM since the 1970s, if not earlier. In 1993, the Mural Coalition was formed by several student organizations working to address campus art and murals. The Mural Coalition had three main objectives. The first was to request the removal of the Kenneth Adams murals in the library, and/or to develop a way to educationally address the historical specificity of the murals' content. The Mural Coalition's second objective was in to recreate and replace a Student Union Building mural that had been painted over when repairs were made in the SUB in the summer of 1993. The original mural was designed and created by a group of student artists in 1981 who were dedicated to creating a mural depicting Chicano/Mexicano history. The third objective of the Mural Coalition was to promote and develop more mural art on campus and called for the university to fund mural projects emphasizing themes of history, people's struggle, environment, and culture, along with setting up a more formal structure for how decisions were made for mural art installations on campus.
