Biographical Note
David Ross Boyd served as the president of University of New Mexico from 1912-1919. Boyd received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wooster. He received an honorary Ph.D. from the University of Wooster in 1900. Prior to arriving at UNM, he was in missionary work. Boyd was the first President of the University of Oklahoma, a position he held from 1892-1908. During his tenure at UNM, he focused on increasing the enrollment. There were 78 students in 1912 when Boyd arrived and 348 when he left in 1919.
Many changes occurred at UNM during Boyd’s time as president. In 1915, the Board of Regents adopted a policy giving the President full power to discharge selected members of the faculty. Boyd also had a telephone system installed in 1916 with an instrument in each dorm, offices, the dining hall, etc. Other changes he made were to the campus grounds. Boyd built up the physical size of the university by enlarging the campus from 20 acres to 300 acres, and had a survey performed on a 200,000-acre federal land grant. The University actively participated in wartime training after the entry of the U.S. into World War I in April 1917. A branch of the Red Cross was begun and classes were added in home nursing and dietetics. Dr. Boyd resigned as President of UNM in 1919.
