Biographical Note
Edward Dundas McQueen Gray became president of the University of New Mexico in April 1909. Gray completed his graduate work at the University of Heidelberg and the University of London. He traveled extensively before settling in Loving, New Mexico in 1893. He was active in the civic community and authored several books.
Prior to taking office Gray attended many educational meetings in Denver and Seattle to promote UNM. During his time as president of UNM, he introduced formal dress codes to the campus. He also set up a bureau of student employment to provide positions for students in need. The President's Office set up a system of record keeping due to the lack of cohesive system from previous administrations. Gray also recommended that a home for the President of the University be provided; a law school be established; and a Spanish-American College be created in New Mexico. Gray tendered his resignation in February 1912 after the Board of Regents indicated that his service was no longer needed.
