Biographical Note

Clarence Luther Herrick was appointed President of the Faculty in charge of the University on September 1, 1897 with an annual salary of $1,800.00. Herrick received his undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees from the University of Minnesota. He was a well-known scholar in the field of geology and published several reports on the fauna of Minnesota. He came to New Mexico after contracting tuberculosis. He became an expert in regional geology of New Mexico and published extensively on the subject. During Herrick’s tenure as president, the University was viewed as a scientifically developing institution due to his efforts in establishing a laboratory for bacteriological research. Those efforts led to the first large donation ($10,000.00) to the University by Mrs. Walter Hadley for the construction of the Walter C. Hadley Laboratory and Science Hall. The laboratory, which was the second building on campus, was completed February 1, 1900.

Herrick also started the process to acquire saline lands in southern New Mexico that led to a decades-long controversy. While Herrick was president, the Board of Regents adopted an extensive advertising program to promote the University, increase the enrollment, and make the institution recognized as the leader of the territorial school system. Herrick’s tuberculosis worsened during his last year as President and he resigned in 1901. He passed away in Socorro in 1904.
