Scope and Content

The Robert L. Torres collection is comprised of nearly 1300 drawings and plans for projects such as the New Mexico State Penitentiary, New Mexico State Hospital, Martineztown Rehabilitation, and New Mexico Commission for the Blind, in addition to several residences, schools, and churches. Primarily representing Albuquerque, all drawings are known to be of sites in New Mexico.

This collection is open for research; however access to drawings of the New Mexico State Penitentiary (Santa Fe) and New Mexico State Hospital (Las Vegas) requires authorization from the appropriate governing state agency.

Biographical Information

After receiving his training in architecture from the University of Texas, Robert L. Torres relocated to Albuquerque, working for Lawrence A. Garcia & Associates before starting his own firm in 1968. The firm Robert L. Torres and Associates designed many public and community projects throughout New Mexico including public and parochial schools, childcare centers, the New Mexico State Hospital, University of New Mexico Married Student Housing, and the Martineztown Urban Renewal Project. Torres was appointed by Governor Jerry Apodaca to the General Construction Board of New Mexico in 1976, Regional Housing Authority in 1977, and Chairman of the New Mexico Construction Industries Advisory Board in 1978. A member of the Environmental Planning Commission for the City of Albuquerque, Torres won the National Award for Energy Innovation in 1984 for his energy-saving earth-sheltered design for the Sunland Park Elementary School in Albuquerque. Torres was also an active member of the Albuquerque Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and served as Chairman of the AHCC Discovery 1992 Committee. Torres became a certified planner and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners in 1997.
