Biographical Information
In 1929, Fred Fricke graduated from the University of New Mexico with a B.S. in Engineering. Fricke’s professional experience began in 1929, as a structural steel detailer, on highway and railroad bridges in Pennsylvania. He went on to work for the Pittsburg-Des Moines Steel Co., as a structural detailer on steel tanks and towers. In 1930, Fricke became a Junior Civil Engineer with the U. S. Bureau of Agricultural Engineering, conducting research and investigative work regarding the cost of irrigation water to citrus growers of Southern California. From September 1930 to 1933, Fricke continued as a Civil Engineer with the Bureau of Agricultural Engineering in Austin, Texas, where he worked in a silt laboratory, doing theoretical work determining river silt discharge amounts. From 1933 to 1934, he worked with the U.S. Geological Topographic Branch in Amarillo, Texas.
In 1934, Fricke was named Chief Engineer for the Trinity River Survey in Texas, where he gained experience in making river discharge measurements to create rating curves. On the same river, he did cost and design estimates of lock and dams, and participated in a Flood Control Study (1935). Also in 1935, Fricke worked on construction of a concrete cap for the jetty at Corpus Christy, Texas. He continued similar work for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1936-1938.
From 1938-1948, Fricke worked in structural steel design for government buildings. Most notably, Fricke became a structural engineer for E. I. Du Pont de Nemours Company (1940-1945), assisting with design of atomic energy structures in Hanford Works, Washington. By 1948, Fricke was working with the W.C. Kruger architecture firm at the Sandia Base in New Mexico. Fricke stayed in New Mexico establishing his own engineering practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 1949-1960.
