Organizational Background

Originally a partner of the New Mexico Community Foundation, Cornerstones Community Partnerships, based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, formed its own non-profit organization in 1986. Cornerstones works in partnership with communities to restore and document local historic structures and to revive local building practices.

Cornerstones is the recipient of two major national funding awards; Save Americas Treasures, a federal grant for the protection of America's threatened cultural resources; and a grant from the Getty Foundation. Additionally, Cornerstones has achieved national acclamation for their community based service model. Cornerstones provides free technical assistance, trouble shooting, conditions assessment reports and educational programming to communities, on how to preserve and rebuild their historic adobe structures, through on-site visits and workshops. Cornerstones also works with local youth programs, teaching the skills of the adobe trade and fostering a sense of pride, leadership and dedication to community, by preserving the vernacular architecture and cultural heritage of century old buildings.
