Organizational Background

Building on his professional experiences with leading design firms including The Architects Collaborative and Richard Haag Associates as well as the False Creek Team of the Vancouver, BC’s City Planning Department, Mr. Campbell established “Craig Campbell & Associates" in Santa Fe in 1976. A National Endowment for the Arts grants winner, he prepared a report on “Water in Design and Nature" concurrently with the start of his professional practice in Santa Fe. Among the projects his firm was responsible for are the New Mexico Museum of Natural History; Dorsey Mansion State Monument (Abbott, NM); South Capitol Complex and Ragle Park (Santa Fe); Lomas Boulevard (Phil Chacon) Pedestrianway Master Plan and Mary Fox and Sandia Vista parks in Albuquerque; and many other public and private projects.

In 1980 the firm opened an office in Albuquerque. William Perkins, formerly an associate with EDAW, Inc. in San Francisco, joined the firm and assumed management leadership responsibilities for the Albuquerque office which led the efforts on such projects as the Yale Pedestrian Mall on the UNM campus; the Family Practice Courtyard and Fountain (UNM); Copper Square Adaptive Use (El Fidel Hotel, Las Vegas, NM)); Yale Boulevard Medians at the Sunport; Longfellow Elementary School and a large number of other Albuquerque Public School projects. In 1983 the firm incorporated with Faith Okuma with Mr. Perkins assuming principal responsibilities. The name was changed to “Campbell Okuma Perkins Associates," but the firm came to be known simply as “COPA". Among the more significant projects accomplished by COPA are the Rio Grande Botanic Garden; Commemorative Walkway in Santa Fe; Los Padillas Elementary School Constructed Wetland and Outdoor Classroom; Gateway Park Master Plan (Farmington); and the Sycamore Plaza and fountain.
