Scope and Content

Photographs documenting the construction and dedication ceremonies at Santa Maria de Acoma, a catholic church and mission at McCartys, New Mexico designed by John Gaw Meem. Construction scenes include: Acoma tribal members working construction, horse teams and trucks loaded with logs, priest and Indian craftsmen carving corbels, building stone walls. Others show the completed structure, including interior views of the altar and religious art (carved stations of the Cross and Last Supper panels). Finally, dedication ceremonies include photos of church officials (Archbishop Gerdsen, Bishops Vehne and Schuler), Indian children and adults in ceremonial dress and and Eagle Dance. Also identified are John Sanchez and Jose Ortiz, and Acoma tribal officials: Govs. Juan L. Hashans and Albert Paytronis, Lt. Gov. Santiago Howeyn. There are photos of an open-air altar with native decoration and American flag, and religious ceremonies: Baptism, First Communion, Mass. Prints are 4 by 5 in.
