Cowboys and Ranching Photograph Collection

 Collection
Identifier: PICT-995-006

Scope and Content

This collection includes a photo of a cow being branded (previously numbered 992-019-0001); one titled "Roundup, 1902, Forrest, N.M."; and another titled "Scene from Paul Green's 'Texas' in Palo Duro State Park." There is also an outdoor portrait of two ranchers holding horses by the reins in Lake Valley, New Mexico; one depicts a landscape in which a large herd of cattle is seen in the distance.

The folder also contains photographs of working cowboys herding cattle in a wide shallow river, branding a calf, pistol shooting contest, lassoing horses, etc. All on the open sagebrush plains, probably West Texas.

Also in the collection is a photograph of four haltered mules held by two ranch hands. On back of the photo is written; "Mae Latham's, Lake Valley, N.M." The print appears to have been made from a glass-plate negative and is mounted on grey cardstock. The location, subject, pose and glass-plate negative evidence support the assertation that Henry A. Schmidt of Chloride, N.M. may have been the photographer.
