Scope and Content

Among these photographs of Native American subjects are views of Southwestern pueblos (Isleta, Laguna, Zuni, Hopi), feasts (St. Stephen's Day at Acoma) and ceremonies (Hopi Snake Dance), and various Navajo subjects (weaving, baskets, dwellings, death). Several photographs show interactions between Native American and Hispanic American or Anglo American peoples on feast days, at ceremonies, and inside Native American homes. Other photos of special interest include the waffle gardens at Zuni; a Catholic funeral at Isleta; Antelope, Wiki, and Snake priests at Snake Dance; interiors of Native American homes; a Native American policeman from Keam's Canyon; Sheriff of Acoma; Native American arts (pottery, weaving, baskets), including women at Laguna Pueblo standing beside Santa Fe Railroad tracks and carrying ollas on their heads; and Hopi women grinding corn.

Besides George Wharton James other photographers represented are C. C. Pierce, E. E. Hall, and Maude & Company of California. Frederick H. Maude was a partner in Maude & Company and worked with James.
