Identifier: PICT-992-004

Scope and Content

This collection consists of photographs documenting men identified as public officials of New Mexico. Many of the portraits depict men who served in the New Mexico House of Representatives and Senate, however, there is also a considerable variety among those included. For example, school superintendents, city mayors, justices of the New Mexico Supreme Court, prominent ranchers and businessmen are all represented. The collection only includes one female official, Stephanie Gonzales, the New Mexico Secretary of State during the nineties. The vast majority of portraits name the men they depict, but there are a limited number of unidentified men in the collection.

History

Following the Mexican American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and the Compromise of 1850, New Mexico was incorporated into the United States as the Territory of New Mexico. During its early history as a territory, New Mexico played an important part in the United States Civil War. In 1912, New Mexico was admitted to the union as a state. Both during New Mexico’s years as a territory, and during its early statehood, government officials ranging from the state legislature to county and municipal government played an important role. Various officials administered justice through the court system, handled the administration of civic institutions such as schools and hospitals, and governed the state, counties, and cities.
