Scope and Content
Album (purple cover with black leather spine and corners, marbled end papers; 30 x 39 cm.) contains photographs (34 x 24 cm., or smaller) made in Mexico by A. Briquet and in the southwestern U.S. by William Henry Jackson. Some are captioned and bear photographer's name. Subjects include: city and village views; railroads in landscapes; dwellings; civic, religious, and commercial buildings; historical sites; occupations (some cartes de visite of street vendors); markets; precolumbian art; trees and plants. Among the photographs of cathedrals are those of Mexico City, Chihuahua, and Puebla. There are a small number of southwestern railroad and Pueblo views. Of special note are the artfully composed, large format Mexican views by A. Briquet, including cityscapes, Aztec sculpture, and railroad views. Also of note are photographs by Jackson of railroad tracks in a narrow Western canyon and a cart with children at Laguna Pueblo.
