Scope and Content

This souvenir album from Mexico contains photographs of the best-known and most distinctive sights that a collector or traveler in the late nineteenth century might consider representative of that country. The photographs are well-composed and captioned in Spanish and English. Views include governmental and religious buildings, monuments, avenues, and parks in Mexico City, street vendors and their wares, cityscapes and village views, peasants and their labors (including extraction of pulque), agriculture, bullfights, an Independence Day celebration, village and town views, agriculture, and landscapes with the volcano, Popocatepetl.

Many of the photographs are by A. Briquet, a French photographer who worked in Mexico, and are part of his "Vistas Mexicanas" series. Some photographs are by the Original Hole in the Wall Studio in Mexico City. Prints are in a black leather album.
