Scope and Content

A photographic study taken along Route 66 in New Mexico and Arizona. Artifacts of the tourist trade, including signs, shops, motion picture theaters, post offices, gas stations, and motels, are the focus of this collection. There are photographs of Old Town Plaza in Albuquerque and of Laguna Pueblo, as well as artistic landscapes, skyscapes, and views of the road. Other locations in New Mexico include the Continental Divide, Cuervo, Gallup, Glenrio, Newkirk, Rio Puerco, Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Central Avenue (Albuquerque). Other locations include Lupton, Arizona and trading posts in Arizona and New Mexico. Exhibition-quality mounted and matted prints.

Biography

William J. Lucas, who taught photography at UNM, 1977-1988, was born 1926, in Red Oak, OK. He attended the Oklahoma Military Academy, Oklahoma State University, St. Michael's College, and the University of New Mexico. His military service included World War II and the Korean conflict. After settling in New Mexico in 1952, he took up photography in earnest in 1962. Although his Route 66 subjects are black and white photographs, he also worked in color. He died in 1997, in Oklahoma, after a long illness.
