History
The Valley Ranch (c.1926-1948) was a vacation resort on the Pecos River near Glorieta, New Mexico, accessible from the pre-1937 path of Route 66. It was also a stop on the Indian Detours motoring tours. Originally inhabited by the Pecos Indians, and then part of the Canon de Pecos land grant, Alexander Valle purchased the land in 1852 as a private ranch. Eventually, the year-round resort was one of a number of popular campgrounds and dude ranches. During its heyday, the Valley Ranch, boasted its own Post Office and Sunday afternoon rodeos. After 1947, it was owned and managed by a number of other organizations, including Trappists and Benedictines as a monastery, and served as a retreat center.
