History

In 1955, Angel B. Collado was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While there, Collado realized that New Mexico, at the time the only U.S. state to recognize both English and Spanish as official state languages, lacked a Spanish-language newspaper. In 1966, he, along with Eliseo Casillas and Emilio Baglietto, began to publish the weekly El Hispano News in Albuquerque because, as Collado wrote in the first issue “se hace imperativo la creación de un periodico en español que haga circular las ideas y pensamientos hispanos.” [it has become imperative to create a Spanish-language newspaper in order to circulate Hispanic ideas and thoughts.]

Shortly thereafter, in early 1967, El Hispano News was proclaimed the official Spanish-language newspaper of the state of New Mexico. Collado, who would stay on as the publisher of El Hispano News for its entire 45-year history until 2011, also served terms as President of the New Mexico Press Association and the El Paisano Spanish Toastmaster Club. At its peak, the newspaper had a circulation of over 10,000 statewide and in California, Colorado, Texas, and other states. It covered local, national, and international stories of interest in politics and Hispanic entertainment and culture. El Hispano News, which was located at 900 Park SW for 36 of its 45 years, ceased publication on May 27, 2011, never once having missed a week.
