Chilean Ephemera Collection
Collection
Identifier: PICT-2012-011
Scope and Content
The Chilean Ephemera Collection has three series. The first contains ephemeral materials documenting the 2011 Chilean student protests. The second series contains 32 posters by Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez. The third contains 23 arpilleras.
Series 1: Chilean Student Protest Materials 2011
Series 1 is comprised of materials related to the 2011 student protests that took place across Chile against perceived inequalities in Chile’s educational system. Using propaganda to target the Chilean government and its acceptance of for-profit educational institutions, the students produced materials such as photocopied pamphlets, fliers, and screen printed art that was distributed to disseminate their ideas and organize mass protests. The series also includes photographs of protest activities.
A 2014 addition of stencil and screen printed art, and photocopied fliers is in box 3.
Series 2: Guillermo Nuñez Posters 1970-1998
Series 2 is comprised of a series of 32 posters by Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez that contains exhibition announcements as well as activist-oriented prints featuring the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Paul Éluard. The series also includes posters depicting the Pinochet-era Villa Grimaldi concentration camp, where Nuñez underwent incarceration and torture in the mid-1970s.
Series 3: Chilean Arpilleras 1970s-1980s
Series 3 is comprised of 23 textile arpilleras donated by Beverly Joy-Karno. The pieces were purchased directly from the women who lost family and friends during the military dictatorship. 7 pieces are from the women’s workshop, MACUL. MACUL was the first urban women’s workshop formed by the wife of President Frei, María Ruiz-Tagle. The themes are pacific.

History
The Chilean Ephemera Collection combines three series of protest materials relating to the late twentieth-century dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) and the legacy of his government’s policies that prompted tens of thousands of young Chilean students to participate in a number of protests between 2011 and 2012. The first series contains a number of photographs, leaflets, posters, prints, and stencils created during the student protests against market-oriented Chilean educational policies in 2011. Many of these materials were created using silk-screen, stenciling, and photocopying techniques intended for wide distribution among the protests’ participants. The second series contains poster prints by renowned Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez—imprisoned by the dictatorship for a time in 1974—which depict events featuring Nuñez as well as prints and hand-produced pieces featuring the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Paul Éluard. The third series contains 23 textile arpilleras donated by Beverly Joy-Karno. The pieces were acquired directly from the women who lost family and friends during the military dictatorship. 7 pieces are from the women’s workshop, MACUL. MACUL was the first urban women’s workshop formed by the wife of President Frei, María Ruiz-Tagle.
