Scope and Content

The collection consists of 131 posters from Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico from the early 1970s collected by Jane Norling and 50 Cuban posters collected by artist and activist Lenora (Nori) Davis in the 1980s. Represented in this collection are such renowned Cuban graphic artists as Berta Abelenda, René Mederos, Raúl Martínez, Antonio Pérez (Niko), Olivio Martínez, Antonio Fernández Reboiro, Alfredo Rostgaard,Félix Beltrán, and Eduardo Muñoz Bachs, among others. Subjects addressed by these posters are numerous including film, solidarity with the struggles of "Third World" countries, labor, tourism, disease prevention, women, energy conservation, the Vietnam War, and the Cuban Revolution. The posters were produced for such issuing agencies as the Dirección Nacional de los Comités por la Defensa de la Revolución (CDR), Organización en Solidaridad con los Pueblos de Asia, Africa y América Latina (OSPAAL), Instituto Cubano de Arte e Industria Cinematográfica (ICAIC), Federación de Mujeres Cubanas (FMC), and the Comisión de Orientación Revolucionaria (COR). 61 of the 181 posters in the collection are large-scale serigraphprints.

History

This collection of 181 predominately Cuban posters was donated to the University of New Mexico's Center for Southwest Research by Berkeley artist and graphic designer Jane Norling. The collection consists of 131 posters from Cuba, Nicaragua and Mexico from the early 1970s collected by Jane Norling and 50 Cuban posters collected by artist and activist Lenora (Nori) Davis (1949-1990) in the 1980s. The collection was featured in the exhibition New Acquisitions: Selections from the Jane Norling & Lenora (Nori) Davis Collection and the Sam L. Slick Collection of Latin American & Iberian Posters in 2007 at the University of New Mexico.
