Charles R. Brady Jr. Rainbow Bridge/Monument Valley Expedition Photographic Album
Collection
Identifier: PICT-2003-015
Scope and Content
The full hand-written title is Photographic Record of the Work and Play of the Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition 1933. The album seems to have been compiled by Charles R. Brady Jr. Black-and-white snapshots provide a record of this scientific expedition to Utah in 1933. Included are:expedition participants at work surveying and at their leisure in camp. There are photos of Navajo Indians (some on horseback.) Other photos show landscapes, pueblos, trading posts (Kayenta and Begashebito), and archaeological sites. Some photos are missing.
This album does not include a photograph of Rainbow Bridge, nor does it include photographs which were also published in Ansel Hall's General Report. It does show more leisure than work images, with many snapshots of dogs, pack animals, and vehicles. The final set of 7 images appear to be urban views in large, unidentified cities, possibly documenting European travel. Prints are 11 x 15 in.

History
While no biographical information about Charles R. Brady, Jr. is included, Brady is identified among the mapping personnel in Ansel Franklin Hall's General Report: Rainbow Bridge-Monument Valley Expedition of 1933. Between 1933 and 1938, there was a series of expeditions led by Hall for the National Park Service, with the ultimately unsuccessful goal to establish a national park in the region; the area remains a national monument.
