Leopoldo Mendez Rio Escondido Folio

 Collection
Identifier: PICT-2003-012

Scope and Content

Blue cloth-covered portfolio containing ten signed linocut prints by Leopoldo Mendez of the Taller de Gráfica Popular and published by La Estampa Mexicana. This is no. 12 of 100 copies produced. The inside cover of the portfolio contains a bilingual text (Spanish/English) by Mendez summarizing the story illustrated. The prints were made to function like a mural based on the film "Rio Escondido," directed by Emilio "Indio" Fernandez, starring Maria Felix, with cinematography by Gabriel Figueroa. The prints were reproduced in the film itself, at the beginning of the movie. The story is that of a courageous village school teacher in Mexico who leads popular resistance to an unjust political boss who controls the town. The prints are dramatic black-and-white interpretations of important moments in the film story.
