Background Informaiton
The Albuquerque Dukes were a minor league baseball team. The first team was formed in 1915 as part of the Rio Grande Association which lasted for 1 year. The Albuquerque Dons joined the Arizona-Texas League in 1932, but folded that same year due to financial problems. In 1937, the Albuquerque Cardinals joined the Arizona-Texas League. The Dukes returned to Albuquerque in 1942 with the West Texas-New Mexico League, which later that year suspended operations for the duration World War II. In 1956, they began to play in the Class A Western League as an affiliate of the New York Giants, then the Cincinnati Reds. The Western League folded at the end of the 1958 season. The Dukes returned to Albuquerque again in 1960, playing as an affiliate of the Kansas City Athletics.
The Los Angleles Dodgers began their 47 year relationship with the Dukes in 1963. Dissatisfied with the aging conditions of Duke Stadium, the owners sold the franchise to a group in Portland who moved the team to their city in 2000, renaming them the Portland Beavers.
In 2003, the Calgary Cannons (an affiliate of the Florida Marlins) were moved to Albuquerque as the Albuquerque Isotopes. The Isotopes once again became an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2009-2014. Since 2015, they have been the Triple A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
The new and award winning Isotopes Park opened in 2003 at the site of the old Dukes Stadium.
