Biography

J. B. (John Brinckerhoff) Jackson, author, editor, and educator, was born to American parents on September 25, 1909, in Dinard, France. He was educated in France, Switzerland, and the United States. He studied architecture at MIT for one year before departing to work as a reporter, and then to travel by motorcycle across the country. Eventually, he settled in northeastern New Mexico. Credited with founding the field of landscape studies, Jackson elevated vernacular architecture and landscapes to a level of study once reserved for architect-designed buildings. He founded, published, and edited Landscape, a magazine that covered topics relating to cultural landscape. La Cienega, N.M. was Jackson's home base from 1965 until his death in August of 1996.

First series:

Paul Groth, a Ph.D. student in the department of Landscape Architecture at UC Berkeley, worked as a teaching assistant for J. B. Jackson. Groth remained a colleague and friend of Jackson’s for the remainder of Jackson’s life. After Jackson’s death, Groth donated about the 3,300 item collection of slide images used by Jackson to teach the course “History of American Cultural Landscape” at Berkeley.

Second series:

This series of European slides was compiled by J. B. Jackson and donated by Marc Treib, a Professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley. After Jackson’s retirement from Berkeley, Jackson gave his European slide collection which he used to teach the course “Studies of European Landscape” at Berkeley, from the 1960s-1980s to Treib, who worked for Jackson as a graduate assistant. In 2009, Dr. Treib donated the image collection to the CSWR. Professor Treib is the author of Sanctuaries of Spanish New Mexico and several other books.

Third series:

This series of American slides was compiled by J. B. Jackson and donated by Chris Wilson.
