Scope and Content

The collection documents the life and, more specifically, the commercial activities of Chief Joseph Secakuku, a member of the Hopi Nation. "Chief Joseph" or "Chief Joe," as Secakuku was commonly known, was a forerunner in the marketing of Native American arts and culture to tourists in the Southwest. Prints are 8 x 10 in., or smaller.

Photographers represented in this collection are Scotts Studio (Oxnard, California), Freda Parrish (Keystone Photo Service, Los Angeles, California), and R. G. & D. Photo.

Biography

Joseph (Joe) Secakuku was a Hopi Indian from Shipaulovi, Second Mesa. He opened his first trading post at Canyon Diablo (now Two Guns, Arizona) by 1926. He later moved his store to Holbrook, and with his brother Hale opened two large stores at Second Mesa. He also had a store in Winslow, Arizona. Secakuku was chief of the Snake Society. In the 1960's, he retired from the trading business when he became chief of Shipaulovi's Bear Clan. Secakuku was in his 80's when he died of cancer in 1969.
