Scope and Content

A Mexican immigrant arriving in the U.S. in 1870 at the age of 10, Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo became a prominent educator, attorney, and politician. The collection contains two photographs (3 1/2 x 5 in. or smaller), both unidentified (Larrazolo?) male subjects, one child, one young adult.

Biography

Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo was a politician and educator. He was born in 1859 in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico and educated in New Mexico. In 1895, Larrazolo moved to Las Vegas, N.M. where he established a law office. He ran several times for political office and was elected governor of New Mexico in 1918 where he worked to include safeguards for the rights of "Spanish-Americans" in the drafting of the New Mexico State Constitution. In 1928, he was elected to U.S. Senate.
