Biography / History

Ormand John Birdsong was born on April 17, 1919 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. During World War II, he worked at Collins Radio, a manufacturer of radio communications equipment for military aircraft. He married Mary Jane Plate in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1944. The Birdsongs moved to Cañon City, CO in 1947, where he worked as a chief engineer at broadcast station KRLN. In 1951, he accepted a position as an Electrical Technician at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. While at Sandia, he invented “A Tracking Offset Bias Supply for a Constant Current Resistive Gage Element.” Birdsong retired from Sandia in 1983, and moved back to Cañon City. He died on February 26, 1999.
