Scope and Content
This small selection of visual material has been transferred from the corresponding Joseph Foster Collection. It is comprised primarly of photographs of people and a few scenic views believed to be from Foster's travels. Also included are four (4) postcards addressed to Foster. Named people include Joe and Marque (Joseph and Margaret Hale Foster), Owen and Mary, Malcolm Collier, Mariana, Dr. Goetzl, Mr. Curry, and a 1871 cabinet card with the names Virginia Swinburne and Harriet Hale. Locations include Algeria, Gibraltar, Trujillo, the Andes in Peru; and on postcards: Old Church, Rancho de Taos, the Western Hotel in El Paso, Walpi (Arizona) and Saigon. Except for postmarks from 1920 to 1937 on the postcards, items are undated.

Biographic Information
Joseph Foster was born 27 June 1898 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended University of Wisconsin (1915-19) and worked in the publishing field before moving to Taos, New Mexico, in 1921. In Taos he began as a salesman of hand-printed Christmas cards for Ralph Pearson and his wife Margaret Hale; Foster married Margaret Hale in 1928. Foster was well connected among the Taos and Santa Fe art colonies. Joseph Foster travelled extensively in Europe and published in literary magazines as well a many books under a number of non-de-plumes.
