Scope and Content

This collection includes photographs, negatives, slides, posters, storyboards, and other visual material. In addition to family and travel photographs, it includes extensive research, documentation, and site photography related to his professional work in the film industry in Hollywood, southern California, and sites world-wide.

The material, with both personal and professional subjects, is grouped roughly by format and size, beginning with correlated prints and negatives of personal and professional subjects, then video recordings (primarily interviews and "making of" documentaries), moving to large groups of still negatives, albums, storyboards, and large format works on paper, including artwork.

Biography

Elmo Williams (James Elmo Williams) was born in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma in 1913, and moved to northern New Mexico in 1916 where his family homesteaded. He returned to Oklahoma to finish high school, but soon left again. Williams moved to Los Angeles, intending to enroll at the University of California, Los Angeles. Instead, he found work assisting the film editor Merrill White. In 1940, Williams met and married Lorraine Cunningham. He served in the Army Signal Corps and US Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he resumed film industry work, editing, directing, and producing. During Williams' career, he worked at 20th Century-Fox and RKO Studios, and earned numerous awards, including an Academy Award for film editing on High Noon in 1952. Williams died in Brookings, Oregon in 2015.
