Florence Hawley Ellis and Donovan Senter Collection of Hispanic, Isleta, and Laguna Songs

 Collection
Identifier: MU-8

Scope and Content

These New Mexico Hispanic and Native American field recordings were taped in the mid-1940s by Florence Hawley Ellis and her husband, Donovan Senter. There is also an oral presentation on the status of Spanish American people of New Mexico, ca 1940-1945, and a criticism of a book by Foster.

The Ellis - Senter home recordings (CDs 7-12) represent a brief portrait into family life at that time. Each CD is short, running under 10 minutes. They have been converted to CD from original wax recordings made by the Ellis - Senter family in 1943. These historic wax recordings represent wonderful examples of early recording technology. The company label states: "Recordio: Wilcox-Gay Corp., Charlotte, Mich. U.S.A"

Collection contains material in English, Spanish and the Isleta language (Tiwa).

Forms part of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music.
