Scope and Content
This collection of field recordings was made in Quito, Esmeraldas and San Lorenzo, Ecuador in the spring of 1977 and spring of 1980 by Tomas White. Also included are several tambora and cununo drum rhythms from Colombia. The collection consists of 5 reels which have been reformatted to cassettes. In addition to the music, his commentary describes the type of marimbas used for the performances and the note patterns and arrangements in the songs.

Biography / History
While a student at the University of New Mexico Centro Andino, in Quito, Ecuador, White received a grant from the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology to study in the Andes and to purchase instruments. He recorded various performances of marimba ensembles. The instruments Mr. White purchased are now housed at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology.
White received his BUS degree from UNM in 1981, his JD in 1988 and MA in 1989. He practices law in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He continues to maintain his interest in Latin American music and has composed music for and written articles about the marimba. He also performs with a local salsa group.
Forms part of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music.
