Route 66 Interviews and Narrative
Collection
Identifier: MSS-995-SC
Scope and Content
The collection consists of transcripts of 2 interviews and 1 narrative regarding the history of Route 66. Interviews were conducted by David King Dunaway.
Dan Harlow’s interest in Route 66 began in the mid-1970s. A photographer and graphic artist, Harlow hooked up with Richard Huffnagle, a business entrepreneur, who started “Route 66 Clothing and Goods," and wanted graphics work and advertising for his company. Harlow, along with others, planned a successful cross country caravan honoring the 66th anniversary of Rt. 66 (1992), bringing publicity to the route and stimulating preservation and promotional activities.
Lawrence and Stella Sanchez, owners of Rod’s Steak House and life-long residents of Williams, AZ, provide first-hand accounts of growing up in Williams, changes that they have seen over the years, and the importance of Route 66 to the local economy. They also relate stories they have heard from travelers over the years.
Tom Snyder is the founder of the Route 66 Association. In his narrative, he “shares his feelings about old Route 66, and the work being done now to restore and revitalize remaining segments of America’s Main Street."
