Biography / History

A Corrales resident, Terrance (Terry) J. Brown has worked in New Mexico as an architect since 1986. His practice includes many years at Native American firms creating culturally sensitive housing, award winning health care, civic and educational facilities that have improved living conditions for Native Americans from Montana and South Dakota to New Mexico and Arizona. He worked for 10 years with Louis L. Weller, FAIA, 2000 Whitney Young Jr. Award recipient. He recently designed a Native American Cultural Center for New Mexico State University. Brown was nominated for the AIA New Mexico Silver Medal for Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. In 2016, he was the recipient of the Edward C. Kemper Award, which is named for the AIA’s first director and recognizes contributions to the profession. Over the course of several catastrophes over the last four decades, Brown has personally trained more than 1,000 US and Canadian architects in ways to mitigate and recover from earthquakes, tornadoes, terrorist attacks and other disasters. Brown, who has served as AIA vice president, has spearheaded disaster response programs, training and credentialing for architects on disaster assistance. His efforts have included guiding the AIA's response to 9/11, which included guidelines for disaster preparedness and recovery. Brown is a 1969 graduate of the Texas Tech University architecture program. He served as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army and was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, for which he received a Bronze Star.
