Scope and Content

The ledger holds 396 documents showing how many, mostly Easterners (Boston, New York, Midwest), invested in land they would never see. Ledger records show Date, Certificate number, and Dollars invested. All investors are recorded by name and address.

Historical Information

The New Mexico and Arizona Land Company began in the second half of the 19th century. In 1908 the company incorporated and by 1916 was on the American Stock Exchange. The land was available for investors who were hoping for gas and oil resource. Most investors never saw the land they purchased. The company owned land in New Mexico and Arizona which held uranium, oil, gas, helium, and potash. In 2016 the company existed as a Mesa, AZ, real estate firm.
