Scope and Content
The collection consists of writings (mostly by Hughes); course, curriculum, and program materials; notes; and resources documenting Marie Hughes’ career as an educator in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico. Hughes’ career focused on early education, curriculum, teaching prospective teachers, multicultural education, and community involvement in early education. A small amount of personal material includes Hughes’ vita, bibliography, and index of her professional library.

Biography / History
Marie M. Hughes received A.B. and M.A. degrees from the University of Chicago, and her Ed.D. from Stanford University in Psychology and Curriculum. Hughes worked in the fields of education and early child development for more than 60 years.
She spent the decade from 1929-1939 in New Mexico. Initially, she taught in Tyrone and Hurley, then served as New Mexico’s first rural elementary school supervisor in Doña Ana County. She also worked for the New Mexico Department of Education on a project at the East San José School in Albuquerque; later becoming principal of the school.
Hughes worked as Curriculum Coordinator and Specialist in Education of Minority Groups for the Los Angeles County Schools from 1940-1948. She then moved to the University of Utah (1948-1963) as professor and principal of its teacher training school. She became affiliated with the University of Arizona (1963) before moving back to NM and joining the University of New Mexico's faculty as director of the Early Childhood Education Program (1970). Hughes retired in 1974 and died in 1981. Marie Hughes Elementary School in Albuquerque, NM was dedicated on Oct. 18, 1981.
