U.S. Army Quartermaster’s Letters and Other Documents Relating to Various Forts in New Mexico

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-945-BC

Scope and Content

Collection consists of printed and manuscript quartermasters’ returns, receipts, and letters relating to construction projects at Fort Wingate and the day to day operations and material necessities at Forts Wingate, Sumner, and Union. All of these documents date from the period during which the Navajo were re-settled in western New Mexico, following their forced removal in 1864—known as The Long Walk—and their subsequent internment at Bosque Redondo, near Fort Sumner. Most of the letters included here were written by E.B. Grimes, Assistant Quartermaster at Fort Wingate—the staging point of The Long Walk and the fort most closely concerned with the management of the Navajo. Grimes was overseeing the construction of two additional barracks, one for the Cavalry and another for the Infantry, and his letters reflect the material needs, labor issues, and progress of the construction. Of particular interest are two letters touching on the subject of Navajo labor. The various returns, receipts, etc. included here provide a detailed record of the equipment, supplies, and personnel involved in maintaining these key Western outposts.
