 Collection
Identifier: MSS-938-BC

Scope and Content

The collection consists of oral history interviews with 12 New Mexico architects. The project was authored by Cecilia Portal in collaboration with the NM Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Albuquerque Chapter of AIA.

Interviewees include Robert Campbell, John Conron, Max and Anne Flatow, Marjorie (Peggy) Hooker, Van Dorn Hooker, Robert Mallory, George Clayton Pearl, Antoine Predock, Donna Quasthoff, Don Schlegel, and Don Stevens. Discussion generally begins with family history, and continues on to the evolution of the individuals' interest in architecture, their education, career, and projects that stand out in their minds as particularly interesting and/or significant. The interviews provide insight into the history of architecture as an academic discipline, as a career, and as a business, as well as shedding light on significant architectural projects in New Mexico.

Interview audio is in digital format. Transcripts of interviews with Robert Campbell, Van Dorn Hooker, George Pearl, Phillippe Register, and Don Stevens are available on CD 1. Other interviews have not been transcribed. A few photographs related to Peggy Hooker and George Pearl are also on CD 1. Photo negatives associated with Robert Campbell are in folder 1.

Biography / History

Cecilia Portal was hired as Executive Director of AIA Albuquerque and AIA New Mexico by the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in November 2001. She was asked to develop "The Architectural Heritage of New Mexico" oral history project as a result of her previous experience as a community scholar and oral historian. The goal of the project was to record the stories of prominent architects who contributed significantly to New Mexico's architectural history and design. Ms. Portal conducted all of the interviews. After each interview, copies of the tapes were provided to the architect so s/he could listen to the tapes and prepare for the next interview. The 3 year process began in 2002 and ended in 2005. Funding support was provided by the New Mexico Humanities Council.

Previous oral history projects conducted by Ms. Portal's are: "Las Mujeres de la Tierra del Sol - Women from the Land of the Sun" telling the life stories of Hispanas from Nuevo Mexico, and "Con el Corazon Partido - With a Split Heart" telling the life stories of Mexican immigrant women living in New Mexico.
