Biography / History
Cecilia Portal was hired as Executive Director of AIA Albuquerque and AIA New Mexico by the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in November 2001. She was asked to develop "The Architectural Heritage of New Mexico" oral history project as a result of her previous experience as a community scholar and oral historian. The goal of the project was to record the stories of prominent architects who contributed significantly to New Mexico's architectural history and design. Ms. Portal conducted all of the interviews. After each interview, copies of the tapes were provided to the architect so s/he could listen to the tapes and prepare for the next interview. The 3 year process began in 2002 and ended in 2005. Funding support was provided by the New Mexico Humanities Council.
Previous oral history projects conducted by Ms. Portal's are: "Las Mujeres de la Tierra del Sol - Women from the Land of the Sun" telling the life stories of Hispanas from Nuevo Mexico, and "Con el Corazon Partido - With a Split Heart" telling the life stories of Mexican immigrant women living in New Mexico.
