Biography / History
The Netherwood Park Neighborhood Association (NPNA), founded in 1987, is a not for profit association representing approximately 400 houses and apartments in the North University area of Albuquerque, NM. The area has always had strong ties to the University of New Mexico. Three educators- Alcinda Morrow, A UNM English professor, Martha Taylor, a UNM associate professor of Geography, and Ada Cutler, an Albuquerque Public Schools elementary school teacher, each purchased land in the area in 1896. By 1910, Ms. Cutler was married to Edwin Netherwood, a home builder and real estate investor and took control of the land once owned by Ms. Morrow and Ms. Taylor. Today the area is home to many UNM students and staff. Boundaries of the NPNA are the AMAFCA flood control ditch on the west; I-40 on the north; Indian School Road on the south, and the Indian Plaza Shopping Center and Texaco on Carlisle Blvd. on the east. Netherwood Park and the urban forest or La Selva de Albuquerque are centerpieces of the neighborhood.
