Scope and Content

This collection consists mainly of newspaper clippings, photographs, and personal correspondence from Paula Hocks, collected by Laurence and Geraldine McGilvery. It includes her first attempt at an artists’ book Neglected Worlds as well as The Book of Sobbs and Etruscan Lunches. Correspondence range from holiday greetings to full page articles on Hocks’ work. Hocks would often write notes on newspaper clippings and then send them to the McGilverys. The collection also includes a folder of correspondence from Hocks to her friend Georgette Price.

Biography / History

Laurence McGilvery and his wife Geraldine owned and operated The Nexus bookshop and gallery in La Jolla, CA from 1960-1966. They expanded into antiquarian bookselling on art in 1965. During that time they befriended artist Paula Hocks and sold some of her artist’s books at various times. Paula Hocks lived in Tesuque, NM when she began creating artist’s books in 1977. Her artists’ books are comprised of collage, xerography, photomontage, and poetry. She was largely a self-taught artist and worked also as a photographer, sculptor, and painter. Hocks lived in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, NM at various times in her life and died in 2003.

Abstract

Laurence McGilvery and his wife Geraldine owned and operated The Nexus bookshop and gallery in La Jolla, CA from 1960-1966. They expanded into antiquarian bookselling on art in 1965. The McGilverys knew Paula Hocks since the early 1960s and handled some of her publications. The papers consist of publicity and correspondence of a personal and business nature.
